June is National Pet Preparedness Month and a great time to go over some tips to make sure you and your pet are prepared for an emergency. While summer can bring beautiful weather to enjoy with your pet, it’s also the time we see disasters such as flooding, wildfires, and tornadoes. Taking the time to create a disaster plan for you and your pet can prove to be life saving. Here are a few tips for ensuring you’re prepared:
  1. Ensure proper identification: make sure your pet has accurate identification, including a microchip and identification tags. Be sure the identification tag is current and easy to read, and remember to notify the microchip company in the case that you move or change phone numbers. This will assist in making sure you and your pet are reunited if separated in a disaster.
  2. Prepare an emergency kit. Building a kit with emergency essentials can be vital if you need to leave your home. Be sure to include food and water, medications, first-aid supplies, important documents such as veterinary and vaccination records, and familiar items such as toys and bedding.
  3. Know where to go. Should you need to leave your home, it’s a good idea to have an escape destination planned in advance, whether it’s the home of a friend or family member, or a pet friendly hotel. Have your pet’s transportation essentials such as leash, harness, crate, or carrier, ready to go.
  4. Stay Together. Natural disasters can be scary for us, and even more so for our pets. Keep your pet as close by as possible and always keep them confined to a safe place or on a leash to ensure they don’t run off if spooked.
Thinking about a natural disaster is no fun, but being prepared can ensure peace of mind for you and your pets this summer.
